Kirken havde behov for at holde rede på hvilke indbyggere, der søgte til hvilke kirker, da de skulle betale for vedligehold af bygninger og løn til præster. Dermed har sognegrænser i snart 1000 år været anvendt til administration af skatter. <br /> <br /> Middelalderens herreder blev anvendt til både kirkelig og verdslig forvaltning. På verdslig side anvendtes de af retsvæsenet helt til 1956. Kirken anvendte indtil 1970 de gamle herredsgrænser til administrativ fordeling af provstier.
